Human Rights and Gender Perspective for the Prevention of Sexist Culture: a Historical Reflection of Patriarchal Masculinities
Keywords:
Human rights, gender perspective, patriarchy, sexism, history, masculinitiesAbstract
The patriarchal system and the means it uses in the reproduction of the stereotypical forms of the ought-to-be of men and women have brought about inequality, exclusion, discrimination and hatred, among other concerns, that have made sexist violence part of Mexican culture. The objective of this article is to examine –from a historical reflection– how society has been configured, exacerbated and even naturalized the ought-to-be of men to reproduce patriarchal behaviors, attitudes and actions, thus perpetuating the devaluation of the feminine –and other gender identities– and its subordination to the hegemonic or dominant masculine. This historical reflection under the gender perspective allows us to acquire knowledge to gain awareness regarding the impact of the reproduction of gender roles and stereotypes, as well as some of the bases that will enable us to design strategies of action and prevention against a sexist culture.
